Let’s talk about alcohol – Health and Welfare Canada, 1985.
Take Action on Over-Drinking. Close up on Health. Take Control.
Drinking is part of our society. Four out of five Canadians drink at least occasionally. Alcohol is available almost everywhere you go – at parties, sporting events, family gatherings and community halls. Advertising leads us to believe that you have to drink to be part of the crowd. Sometimes it’s hard to resist social pressure.
(…) After you have a drink, you may feel more relaxed and have a sense of well being. Soon, however, the effect becomes stronger. Gradually, you lose coordination. Your concentration and judgement become impaired. Remember, alcohol, which is a depressant, will make your problems seem worse.
(…) Be very cautious when you’re not feeling well of when you’re taking medication. Never drink alcohol unless you’ve checked with your doctor or pharmacist on the effect it will have when mixed with the drugs.
(…) You may also decide to avoid drinking while pregnant. (…) But it hasn’t been shown that occasionally drinking small amounts of alcohol causes harm.
(…) When you take control… and choose not to drink or at least not to overdrink, think of the advantages. You save a bundle of money. You think more clearly. You work more efficiently. You’re safer on the road and you’re healthier. So take control of your life. And take it easy.
